Teleco was a
competitor of Anadrill based in Meriden, Connecticut, and they
needed a set of surface sensors for a rig monitoring system
which combined their MWD equipment with surface data. I repeated
the work I had done in my Analysts days except this time I had a
design team full of designers from Pratt and Whitney, and we did
a much better job. I designed another depth system, rpm sensor,
weight on bit sensor, CRT and LCD displays for the rig floor,
and assisted on cabin design.
I also designed
cables, junction boxes, and worked on many other devices, but my
job became increasingly managerial - I had twelve designers. I
also became the CAD champion and worked for years to get CAD in
the door. We chose Xerox Expert, which could do 2D mechanical,
schematic capture, and PC Board design. While not state of the
art, it was good enough for Teleco, and the interface was way
beyond Windows for the mid 80s. Eventually we had about 50
workstations rigged to an Ethernet with servers and plotters.
